HOW DID I HEAR ABOUT DA BURGER SHACK?
My little brother and I love to try new burger places. There is just something about eating a burger, fries and milk shake. I wanted to go on a food adventure and find something new. I jumped on Yelp and located this joint called “DA Burger Shack”. It didn’t look very special and the reviews were fairly mixed. Some good and some bad. Honestly, my expectations were low.
SERVICE = 5 STARS
When the opportunity presents itself, I like to talk to the head chef. Knowing the chef’s history and personality shows me the love and care they put into their food. So with that in mind, I sent a message to the owner on Yelp letting him know we were coming and he replied back to me really fast! His name is Daniel and he was very welcoming and friendly.
Driving up, the restaurant is visible and parking is easy. I went at 8pm ish so the restaurant was already slowing down for the night. They are mostly a lunch place, but the cashier was still welcoming and ready to help us first timers out. It’s kind of like a “5 Guys” style burger joint. You order at the counter, then sit down and wait for them to bring the food to you. The cashier recommended the Stake Burger. Supposedly it won an award. We ordered that burger and a strawberry milk shake on the side. All their burgers come with fries.
We were ushered to a table then waited maybe 10 minutes for our food to be served to us. It could have been faster, but it wasn’t that bad. Nothing I would complain about. Everything is cooked, made and fried fresh on the spot.
What I enjoyed most about the service was Chef Daniel — the owner and head chef. He actually took the time to come out to say “hello” and thank us for coming! He spoke with my brother and I for a few minutes and told us the story of his restaurant. WOW… he is more then qualified. He has worked at The Cheesecake Factory, Shula Burger and was trained by some of the best chefs today. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Way too much to put in this review lol. He ran a very successful food truck for a few years and finally made the move to open up his own location. What I like was he was very open to criticism and improvement. Even though he is highly skilled, he is eager to learn more and hear people’s opinions.
AMBIANCE & CLEANLINESS = 3.7 STARS
The dining room smelled a little bit like cleaning supplies; which is not necessarily a bad thing. At least The ambiance is a mix between Chipotle and a southern bar. The floors are concrete and the walls are wooden. It’s nice. It didn’t blow me away, but for a burger place, it’s pretty good.
TASTE & QUALITY = 5 STARS.
Strawberry Milk shake
Let me start by saying that I really judge milk shakes hard. I’m no chef, but I have been known to make some fine A$$ milk shakes in my time. So y’all can understand my grading system, “Robert is Here” is a 5 STAR and McDonald’s is a 2 STAR… (I can’t think of a 1 STAR right now lol). Burger Shack’s strawberry shake was just alright. My little brother said it best, “David… this is the, ‘I don’t want to make my own shake at home so I came here to get one instead’.” Nothing crazy amazing but still good. I would give it a 3.5 STAR. Chef Daniel did say he is working on improving it soon.
The fries at first taste are kind of different. They seem over cooked and kind of crunchy. However, as you bite into them, they are soft. They have a crunchy shell on the outside and a warm tender inside. I think what really makes them stand out is the salt and flavorings added. Be sure you have a drink because they will get you thirsty. I rate them at 4.5 STARS.
The burger patty was thick and cooked as I ordered it. I would say it’s about ½ inch thick. It’s pretty big. It comes with lettuce, tomato, bacon, egg, and caramelized onions. The flavors of all the toppings mix perfectly with simple flavors of the meat. The bun was well chosen for this burger because it didn’t get in the way. There were already so many other flavors moving around in my mouth that the bun needed to be simple. The burger was so large it was too much for me to finish. I honestly can’t think of anything that would make the burger better. Props to you Chef Daniel! I would give it a 4.9 rating.
WOULD I GO BACK
YES. Chef Daniel was telling me that he is adding a new menu very soon. I am looking forward to trying some of their new items.
